Campomaggi Leathers

RAW MATERIAL

Heart, skin and hands

“Leather is a living material, its entire story is written on its surface.”

Campomaggi bags are made using a particular manufacturing process that involves producing the articles using fine quality 100% Italian full grain natural cowhide, of indisputable quality and resistant to time and treatments.

All the work necessary to complete a Campomaggi bag to the highest standards of workmanship is rigorously carried out by hand, since it is the human ingredient that makes each object unique, original and not standardised.

Once the model has been built, the bag is subjected to the ancient vegetable tanning technique, a completely natural manufacturing process that uses the tannins contained in wood and vegetables, taken from trees such as the mimosa, chestnut, quebracho and oak.

The vegetable tanned leather absorbs the traces of experience. It ages but does not deteriorate. It is precisely the unique changes that occur over time and with use that testify to the natural nature of the product. The colours of the tannins bring intense tones and multiple shades to the leather, and over time and with use these tend to re-emerge on the surface.

Masters of the stud

Campomaggi products are often characterised by studs inserted by hand one by one and “split”, thanks to a particular press customised by the designer, which makes it possible to divide the head of the stud when it is secured, thus giving a unique, irregular effect.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF LEATHER BAGS

SUSTAINABILITY

For the Campomaggi brand, the concept of sustainability starts from the broader concept of respect for the raw material, the leather.

The use of leather is in fact ecological by nature, since it rigorously reuses what is considered waste from the food industry, otherwise destined for invasive and polluting disposal, reinventing it and transforming it into an object of value, worthy of being preserved over time and handed down from generation to generation.

The leathers are then treated with the processes closest to their natural condition, namely vegetable tanning, to allow them to react differently according to their individual characteristics.

This is why we link our concept of sustainability to respect. Respecting a material means adapting to its characteristics and its times, making sure that it showcases its unique nature in a natural way. Each item made with our materials lives over time together with the story of its wearer, so that each object can tell the story of its own experience.

The concept of sustainability is also linked to care. Taking care means dedicating time, attention, it means valuing something. The designer, Marco Campomaggi, strongly distances himself from the idea of quick, emotionless “consumption” and instead emphasises the value of what we choose and desire every day in each collection. Each bag actually contains a Care Kit, consisting of a cream, cloths to apply it and a simple explanation of how to best use this tool. Even the choice of a bag is a choice that identifies and brings out the best in us. The patented kit is not simply an object we give away, but a tool for an experiential and educational journey. Taking care of your bag means having a sensorial relationship with the object that goes beyond everyday use. We want to convey the value of conservation, reflection and time, through every single bag and even the smallest accessory.
